“The Studies on Hunger Disease in the Warsaw Ghetto”

The Warsaw Ghetto, where some 100,000 people died of starvation and disease, became a unique medical laboratory of sorts. In 1942, a team of doctors headed by Dr Israel Milejkowski carried out world-pioneering clinical research under the auspices of the Jewish Council on the physiological changes occurring in the human body due to prolonged starvation. The project was clandestine, as the Germans did not allow Jews to conduct scientific research. Its results were published in 1946 in “The Hunger Disease”, edited by Emil Apfelbaum.

The POLIN Museum is organising a popular science session commemorating the work of Warsaw Ghetto doctors and highlighting the importance of their research into hunger disease. It is complemented by a lecture addressed to the general public by the well-known Argentine journalist Martín Caparrós, author of the well-known book-length reportage “Hunger”. Simultaneous Polish-English interpretation is provided during the sessions.
