The conference “Forms of Resistance. What community of memory are we building?”
The resistance movement during World War II included various forms of opposition to the occupation authorities, but the strongest imprint in the collective memory was the armed fighting. Resistance of the civilian population expressed, among other things, by sabotaging work for the occupying forces, participation in secret teaching, propaganda activities or assistance to repressed people involved enormous risks, including risking one’s life, required the involvement of many people and was often an example of efficient organisation of entire networks of people. Despite this, the glorified heroes are still those with a rifle in their hands. Why is there such an adoration of bloodshed and obliviousness to the daily struggles of brave civilians? How does this attitude translate into education, the perception of history and the formation of contemporary patriotic attitudes? These questions will be the focus of meetings at the POLIN Museum’s educational conference devoted to the memory of the civilian population of the Warsaw Ghetto.
