Course “Women in Resistance to the German Occupiers in the Warsaw Ghetto”

The lecturers, Polish academics, writers and activists, will look at the history of the Warsaw Ghetto from the perspective of women and gender. They will introduce profiles of Jewish women who took part in the resistance against the German occupier, including Zionists such as Cywia Lubetkin and Tosia Altman, and communists such as Dorka Goldkorn. Together with the lecturers, the participants will reflect on why the history of resistance in the ghetto has so far neglected the participation of women and the importance of gender in understanding the history of the ghetto. The course accompanies the POLIN Museum’s publication published in 2023 by the Czarne Publishing House, entitled: “Kwestia charakteru. Bojowniczki z getta warszawskiego” [A Question of Character. Women fighters from the Warsaw Ghetto], Monika Sznajderman and Sylwia Chutnik (eds.).

The course is organized together with the Jewish Women’s Archive.
